The story of Equestria begins with the opening of a story book. In early times, the royal sisters Princess Celestia and Princess Luna peacefully ruled over Equestria together. Princess Celestia is the older sister of Princess Luna. Equestria is a magical land populated with ponies and many other fantastical creatures. Princess Celestia uses her magic to raise the sun at dawn. Princess Celestia can be abbreviated to Celestia. Princess Luna uses her magic to raise the moon at dusk. Princess Luna can be abbreviated to Luna. The balance of Celestia raising the sun and Luna raising the moon maintained harmony in Equestria for many years. Over many years, Luna grew resentful of Celestia's fame. Luna believed that the ponies saw her night sky, and Luna herself, to be inferior to Celestia and her sun. The ponies would play throughout Celestia's day, but shun and sleep through Luna's night. Over many years, the bitterness in Luna's heart grew to a critical level. One day, Luna refused to lower the moon to make way for dawn. Celestia tried to convince Luna to lower the moon, but she refused. Luna's refusal to lower the moon was brought on by her transformation into Nightmare Moon. Nightmare Moon is the evil alter-ego of Princess Luna. The bitterness and anger that had built up in Luna over many years transformed her into the evil Nightmare Moon. Nightmare Moon vowed to shroud the land in eternal night as revenge against Celestia. Princess Celestia attempted to reason with Nightmare Moon, but her evil spirit could not be deterred. Celestia was unable to defeat Nightmare Moon in battle. After failing to defeat Nightmare Moon in battle, Celestia was forced to use the elements of harmony to banish Nightmare Moon to the moon. The Elements of harmony are the most powerful magic known to ponykind. After banishing Nightmare Moon to the moon, Celestia took over responsibility for raising both the sun and moon over Equestria. After Celestia defeated Nightmare Moon, peace and harmony reigned over Equestria ever since. Twilight Sparkle is a Purple Unicorn. Twilight Sparkle can be abbreviated to Twilight or Twi. Twilight's Mane and tail are straight cut and mostly dark blue, with a stripe of purple and magenta running through it. Twilight has purple eyes. Twilight is of young adult age. Minuette has blue eyes. Minuette has a short mane that is half white and half dark blue. Minuette's tail is long and wavy, and is colored white and dark blue, the same as her mane. Minuette's cutie mark is a golden hourglass. Twinkleshine is a cream colored unicorn. Twinkleshine is of young adult age. Twinkleshine has mane and tail that are pink and curly. Twinkleshine has light blue eyes. Twinkleshine's cutie mark is a cluster of three five pointed stars, the stars are colored light blue. Lemon Hearts is a yellow unicorn. Twilight's friends believe that she is more interested in books than friends. Lyra Heartstrings is a mint-colored unicorn. Lyra Heartstrings can be abbreviated to Lyra. Lyra is of young adult age. Canterlot is the capital city and central power of Equestria. While living in Canterlot, Twilight lived in a penthouse library on top of a tall tower. Spike is a Purple dragon. Spike is of young child age. Spike has green spines growing along his head and tail, giving the appearance of a mohawk. Spike walks on two legs. Spike has Green eyes. Spike is the adoptive younger brother of Twilight, and acts as her assistant. Twilight often attempts to solve problems by brute force. Twilight has little regard for Spike's feelings when focused on a task. When banished to the moon, Nightmare Moon formed a silhouette on the moon in the shape of a mare which was dubbed "The Mare in the Moon". "The Mare in the Moon" is widely regarded as an old ponies tale. Nightmare Moon is widely regarded as an old ponies tale. An old ponies tale is an expression equivalent to a fairy tale myth, or legend. The legend of The Mare in the Moon describes a prophecy that the stars will aid in Nightmare Moon's escape from the moon on the longest day of the thousandth year of her imprisonment. On Nightmare Moon's return after a thousand years, she will attempt to once again shroud Equestria in eternal night and darkness. Twilight is the personal student of Princess Celestia. Twilight dictates letters for Spike to write to Celestia. Twilight regularly communicates with Celesita by letter. Twilight discovered the prophecy of Nightmare Moon's return and attempted to warn Celestia about it, but Celestia dismissed Twilight's concerns as myth and legend. Twilight signs her letters to Celestia as "Your Faithful Student, Twilight Sparkle." Spike sends letters to Celestia by burning them with his dragonfire. The fire that Spike breathes is light green. The Summer Sun Celebration celebrates the longest day of the year. Twilight has been the student of Celestia for many years. Spike receives letters from Celestia by belching them out in a small puff of dragonfire. After Twilight informs Celestia of the prophecy of Nightmare Moon, Celestia sends Twilight to Ponyville with the task of supervising preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration in Ponyville. Twilight travels to Ponyville in a flying golden chariot, pulled by two pegasus ponies of the Royal Guard. The ponies of the Royal Guard all look identical and wear golden Roman-style armor. Celestia sends Twilight to Ponyville to take a break from studying and make friends. Twilight disagrees that making friends is important. The Summer Sun Celebration is being held in Ponyville. Ponyville is a small village located in the valleys below Canterlot. While Twilight is supervising preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration in Ponyville, Celestia tasks Twilight with making friends. Twilight disregards Celestia's instructions to make friends in Ponyville and heads for the library to find proof of Nightmare Moon's return instead. Twilight claims that the fate of Equestria does not rest on her making friends. Twilight does not see making friends as important. The first pony Twilight meets in Ponyville is Pinkie Pie. Pinkie Pie is a light pink earth pony. Pinkie Pie can be abbreviated to Pinkie. Pinkie is of young adult age. Pinkie's mane and tail are dark pink and poofy. Pinkie's cutie mark is three balloons, the balloon in the centre is yellow and the tow on the side are blue. Pinkie has light blue eyes. Twilight's first interaction with Pinkie is an attempted greeting. When Pinkie first meets Twilight, she gasps dramatically and runs away without saying a word. Twilight likes to make sarcastic quips.
